He attended Huntington Beach High School and was a top basketball and football player. Gonzalez excelled in both sports at the University of California, Berkeley. He helped lead the team's football team to the 1996 Aloha Bowl. There, Gonzalez set a record at the school for receptions with nine and was able to tie it. After a few months, Gonzalez helped lead the basketball team to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA basketball tournament. After graduating from highschool He was a participant in the 1997 NFL Draft. The Kansas City Chiefs chose Gonzalez as their number thirteen overall. Gonzalez was a member of the Chiefs from 1997 until 2008. Gonzalez was traded to the Atlanta Falcons. He never caught fewer than 59 passes in Gonzalez's second NFL season.
