Adkins was brought up by a single mother in different working-class areas of London. She was an avid singer of popular music of the present as a child and was capable of playing the guitar and clarinet. It wasn't until her early teens, when she was introduced to rhythm-and-blues singer Etta James and other mid-20th century performers that she began to consider pursuing a career in music. While she was honed in her skills at a government-funded secondary school that specialized in performing arts, a friend began posting songs Adkins had written and recorded on the social media site Myspace. Following her graduation Adkins' music attracted the attentions of record labels. She was signed in 2006 with XL Recordings.
